Bereavement Book Campaign

BUY A BOOK HERE – you can either send directly to a school of your choosing or we can choose a school for you.

Our bereavement book campaign is focused on providing a copy of our childhood bereavement book ‘About Hedgehog’ to primary schools to support the new RSHE grief and bereavement curriculum. We know the power of books in helping children understand the world around them and grief is no different. A gentle book, using the right language for young children to support them in developing an understanding of death and dying.

It is estimated that 127 children are bereaved every day in the UK, children who need support and to feel less alone. By opening up conversations around death with all children, we can help them to process what it means before, during and after bereavement. Through our book we support Grief Encounter – child bereavement charity and Child Bereavement UK with a percentage of sales.

Professor of Education at St Mary’s University Anna Lise Gordon has brought together a unique group of experts from within and outside St Mary’s in the field of bereavement, primary education, literacy and Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) development for a research project entitled Love and Loss – Children using picture books to learn about bereavement and we’re delighted to share this research and that ‘About Hedgehog’ has been included in the additional reading list for children in the report.

Why and how

After losing my Mum and my brother to a Glioblastoma brain tumour within two years of each other, and my Stepdad to cancer around the same time, I needed to find a way to process my own bereavement. As an early years educator I know first hand how important books are in early education. Wanting to do something to help young children whilst processing my own grief, I created ‘About Hedgehog’, hoping to help children feel less alone through grief and bereavement. Our award winning book has gone to many homes to support parents and caregivers in having those first conversations about the death of a loved one.

The book campaign is focused on getting books into schools so that we can support more children across the country, as well as their teachers and families, to talk more openly before, during and after death.

We work with individuals and our business partners across the UK who help us to donate the books, we cover delivery costs for individual donors, include our EYFS, KS1 and KS2 lesson plans and give 10% of book sales to child bereavement charities.

Links to sustainability

As with all of our books, ‘About Hedgehog’ is made sustainably in Gloucestershire with our trusted printers, creating a book with 100% recycled carbon balanced paper as certified by the World Land Trust, no plastic lamination and stitched binding so that we can confidently say that we’ve done everything we can when creating this resource to think about the planet and our legacy of sustainability. Our planet and the natural world is forever a wonderful resource for mindfulness and connection, so we will always be mindful of it when we produce things for people.

‘About Hedgehog’ has been recognised in a number of awards:
