We all know we want to do better and reduce our impact on the planet by implementing some easy eco actions, but everyday life is ‘lifing’ and we’re busy, so how do we do this easily and in ways we can stick to?
Here’s how
We’re not striving for perfection, we’re aiming for realistic goals that are manageable in our everyday lives.
- Use what you have – I’m getting better at using up what I have at home first, so whether that’s using up all the leftover bits in the fridge or freezer or getting every last use out of a soap bar or shampoo before buying new. Using my reusable food storage bags and pouches is a great way to keep food fresh or pop in the freezer.
- Buy loose – where possible I try to buy loose, fruit and veg are much better this way, then I can buy only what I need for each day rather than end up with lots of waste, take those reusable bags with you, you know the ones on the top of the fridge!
- Donate – or sell! Anything that I don’t need either gets sold or donated and I know that food and baby banks are always in need of donations, so it’s worth checking each week to clear anything that could be used by someone else.
- Make it and take it – sometimes this takes a bit of preparation in advance and other times it’s as simple as making a cuppa and just taking it in a reusable cup with you, saves on waste and money, as it all adds up especially if you’re packing for days out over the summer, money saved on things like this can free up money for treats and trips. Pack those lunch bags and save some money for other things.
- Say ‘no’ – so many times I’m asked if I need a bag or something wrapped, especially if you shop in the charity shops, I always say ‘no’ now so I can minimise plastic waste, or at the very least I’ll ask for alternative wrapping, like paper for breakables, that way I can easily reuse or recycle it and no one minds when you say ‘no thanks’! Taking reusables with me helps make it easier too, when I remember!

Call to action
Sustainability can be really simple if we make it so, simple actions made everyday can make for a better world as well as making life easier for us.
