World Book Day

World Book Day

This World Book Day we should be asking ourselves what really matters? Whilst all of the big retail chains are pushing their expensive plastic world book day costumes, the one thing that they don’t really care about is the books. And that’s what really matters on world book day.

How can we do it differently?

It’s a day to champion literacy and give children the opportunity to get books to take home to enjoy reading. It was never intended to put stress on parents to afford costumes and spend lots of money on these for them to just end up in landfill. This world book day, it’s definitely worth remembering that we can create cute costumes for little to no money just by using what we have. It doesn’t need to be competitive, so we should celebrate all costumes or no costumes and really focus on the books themselves. Because reading and engendering a love of literacy is what really matters. It’s fun to dress up in costumes, but it definitely shouldn’t cause anyone more stress, money or upset as a result. So before we all dash out and buy expensive costumes to be worn once, we can look at the alternatives. There are some great initiatives out there, including costume swaps, this is happening locally to us in our local Gloucestershire libraries, great for getting and taking costumes, or swap with friends/family, great to rotate costumes and keep it simple by swapping what people already have. It’s always worth looking in the charity shops too.

If you would like to create a really simple costume, without buying anything new, then download our role play activity pack for our book ‘Away’, which is full of animal masks. These can be coloured in or left black and white, and worn with ordinary clothing, such as;

  • black and/or white for the badger
  • brown, cream or grey for rabbit or deer
  • dark brown and red for robin
  • yellow or yellow and black for bee
  • brown or grey for squirrel
  • red, orange or brown and white for fox
  • rainbow or any colours for butterfly
